Bar Exam AI and Security Policies: Read the Right Administration

A dated official-policy index distinguishing current MPRE rules, a historical California AI prohibition and current administration instructions.

For: Bar-exam researchers and applicants locating official policy

Prevent reliance on stale exam rules or confusion between study tools and secure exam conduct.

What do current official exam-body AI and exam-security policies say?

The current NCBE MPRE rules prohibit unauthorized items and disclosure or reconstruction of secure test content. A February 2025 California bulletin expressly addressed prohibited AI use, but it belongs to that historical administration. For another exam or date, obtain the governing instructions directly from the exam authority rather than treating either document as universal permission or prohibition.

NCBE MPRE: current public security rules

NCBE's public MPRE rules address conduct before, during and after the exam, including unauthorized items and sharing, reproducing or reconstructing test content. [S1] A rule need not name every new tool to create a relevant security boundary.

Read the candidate agreement, test-day policies and any instructions applicable to your appointment together. Do not treat a general study discussion as permission to upload recalled secure exam questions into a chatbot.

California: distinguish a historical bulletin from current instructions

The February 2025 California bulletin explicitly prohibited specified uses of AI and other aids involving exam content. [S2] It is historical evidence of that administration's policy, not a substitute for a later exam's bulletin.

The live State Bar overview opened during this review displayed February 2027 information even though a search result retained a July 2026 title. [S3] That mismatch is a practical warning: read the live page heading and linked instructions, and record the exam date separately from the URL.

Synthetic policy-verification card

A fictional applicant saves a PDF named exam-rules.pdf. The filename gives no assurance that it applies to the upcoming sitting. The proposed verification card records the issuing body, exam, administration date, document title, effective or publication date and checked date.

Keep preparation and examination conduct separate

A tool used to explain public legal rules during preparation raises different questions from a tool used during a secure exam or to reconstruct its content afterward. Check the exam authority's instructions and the terms of any study materials before sharing them.

If a rule is unclear, frame a narrow question for the authority: identify the exam, administration, proposed tool and exact activity. Avoid including secure question content in the inquiry. This page does not grant exceptions or authorize any exam assistance.

Scope and limitations

Selected public-source index checked November 5, 2026. It is not an exhaustive national policy survey or advice about an individual accommodation.

The California 2025 bulletin is explicitly historical. Current instructions may change, and this index does not establish all rules applicable to any candidate or administration.
